Create a New Year’s Vision Not Resolutions

“New Year’s Day. A fresh start. A new chapter in life waiting to be written. New questions to be asked, embraced, and loved. Answers to be discovered and then lived in this transformative year of delight and self-discovery. Today carve out a quiet interlude for yourself in which to dream, pen in hand. Only dreams give birth to change.” –Sarah Ban Breathnach

You are today where your thoughts have brought you. You will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.

We get what we focus on.  Take time this New Year’s to envision the year you want.  If you do, you’ll not only find greater success in following your dreams but have an easier time doing it.  Unfortunately this year end, I’ve been focusing too much on what’s not working and what’s getting in the way of my happiness.  I know no one is to blame and that this kind of mindset isn’t going to create the life of my dreams.

So…I’m taking a new approach, creating a New Year’s Vision.

  • Vision definition: a detailed day in the life of everything working in your life the way that you want, written in the present tense as if it’s already happening.
  • Why it works: When you write a vision and keep it top of mind, your brain begins to filter information, thoughts, words, and actions so that you start to create the vision you seek.

I’ve seen this happen time and time again for my clients and their testimonials attest to it.  We vision as part of their Soul Search work.  Then they get to Researching and Job Searching and voila, their visions play out in their daily lives…

  • The exact words they used in their visions show up in the job descriptions of their new dream job and/or
  • Their new office digs match exactly what they described months earlier in their visions.

It’s not a fluke. A detailed vision sets you on the path to the reality you seek. Forget resolutions, create your dream vision for 2015 & easily find people and situations to support you in making your dream a reality.  Listen to my latest podcast for inspiration to envision and create a career with more meaning and purpose this year.

Happy New Year & Always Follow Your Dreams,

-Maggie

Writing my vision for 2015 took some time and thought, but it’s done and already I’ve thought of new things to add. I even shared it with my significant other so that together we can create what we want this year. My favorite lines in my vision – “our new home has plenty of space” and it’s a place of “peace and happiness.” Of course my business goals also made it into my vision with “expansion in new and exciting ways.” Feel free to comment and share your vision here too. By sharing it you improve it’s chances of coming true by 10 times! Happy New Year.

Seven years ago, Maggie worked with me to develop my first vision statement. At the time I remember that it was so hard to believe that this dream “day-in-the-life” – and at the time it really felt like a dream, a stretch – could exist. In fact, I remember thinking that it may have been too much to ask for.

In preparing to create my 2015 vision statement I revisited that original statement and it stunned me. I was already there. I’ve basically achieved, or am on a direct trajectory to achieve, what I set out to do on almost every level. At first it felt almost supernatural, but I realize that because I was so clear in putting my vision out there to the world, that “dream” kept me focused and ultimately everything I did was geared toward achieving that vision.

So as I sit down to create my own 2015 vision I know that no matter how big I dream I can make it happen. So Maggie’s right, as usual. This process really works. I’ve seen it happen firsthand and it’s amazing what we can do when we put our minds to it.

SO AGREE, a vision is so important… and I’d add two things… 1) don’t be afraid to alter it throughout the year and 2) definitely make sure you read it at a minimum a few times a month… hearing it again, helps you take the steps needed to make it happen.
    stay adventurous, Craig
